Key tips
Back foot in the middle of the tail on the toes to leave room to scoop; front foot in the middle of the board with toes hanging off to allow a sideways flick.
Flick the front foot off to the side in front of you (not straight down like a regular heelflip) so the board flips away rather than straight up.
The backside heelflip and the inward heelflip share the same board rotation. The difference is you stay straight while the board turns 180 degrees.
Front shoulder tends to twist as you flick, which blocks your view of the board. Accept that there will be a moment you cannot see the board and trust your feet.
Learn one-foot landings first: get the front foot on consistently before worrying about the back foot.
Jump as high as possible and lift knees to give the board maximum time to complete its rotation underneath you.
When you see the grip tape coming around, push both feet back down to land on top.
Board width makes a significant difference: narrower boards (7.75 inches or less) are much easier for this trick than wide decks (9 inches).
