What the tutorials teach

Every tutorial agrees the bigspin is fundamentally a 360 shove-it paired with a 180 body rotation traveling the same direction, which is what makes it land easier than the numbers suggest once shove-its, 180s, and pivots are each solid on their own. The back foot does nearly all the work: sources converge on keeping it centered or just barely toe-side on the tail rather than hanging fully off the edge, since over-hanging is the most cited cause of the board flipping, and several describe the motion less as a stiff shove than a long scooping drag or a tail throw aimed down-back-and-forward. The front foot is largely a control and catch point, staying close to the board rather than actively flicking, and most riders catch with it first before setting the back foot down. Shoulders wind up and turn into the spin direction just like a backside or frontside 180, and beginners are consistently told to practice the spin standing still or slow, and to learn it fakie or nollie first since those stances already sit on the trick's natural pivot point and remove some of the fear of committing.

  • Keep the back foot centered or only slightly toe-side on the tail, hanging the toe fully off the edge is the most common cause of the board flipping
  • Treat the trick as a 360 shove-it happening at the same time as a 180 body rotation in the same direction, not two separate motions bolted together
  • Wind up and turn the shoulders into the spin direction as you bend down to pop, the same wind-up used for a backside or frontside 180
  • Keep the front foot close to the board throughout as a control and catch point rather than trying to actively flick or drag it around the corner
  • Confirm shove-its, 180s, and pivots are each solid individually before combining them into the full bigspin
  • Practice the spin standing still or rolling slow first, if it won't complete a full rotation stationary it isn't ready for speed
  • Learn the trick fakie or nollie before regular, those stances already start on the natural pivot point and need less commitment to land
  • Catch with the front foot first as the board comes around, then bring the back foot down to finish, don't rush the landing before the rotation completes
