What the tutorials teach
Both coaches define the dolphin flip the same way, as a varial kickflip whose rotation is turned vertical by where the front foot flicks, and both say the whole trick lives or dies on finding one specific spot on the nose. That spot is between the center of the nose and the kickflip side: too far out to the side and you get an ordinary varial flip rotating horizontally, too far toward the center or the toeside and it becomes a plain front flip. The stance is close to a kickflip in both videos, with the important modification that the front foot is straighter and less slanted than usual, and the front foot drags up the nose and stays in contact until it releases at the tip. Both also insist you must get your legs up and out of the way, since the board flips end over end directly under you. They differ on timing and on landing. VLSkate treats the pop and flick as a continuous high ollie motion with the weight leaned forward over the board, while Braille explicitly pauses about half a second after popping so the nose has clearance, which is his fix for the board smacking the ground mid rotation. Braille also catches it back foot first because the tail comes around before the nose, and recommends learning the flip out away from your body before bringing it under your feet, whereas VLSkate prefers to jump on top of it from the start and keep the shoulders forward.
- Find the specific flick spot on the nose between the center and the kickflip side; too far to the side gives a varial flip, too far centered gives a front flip
- Keep the front foot pointing straight forward rather than angled, and drag it up the nose so it releases at the tip instead of flicking out to the side
- Give the board room to rotate: either flick slightly late after the pop or pop like a high ollie, and pull your legs up out of the way since it flips end over end underneath you
- Keep your weight and shoulders leaning forward over the board; leaning back kicks it out in front of you and lands you on the tail
- Learn it in stages, first standing still and just kicking the front foot straight off the nose, then flipping it away from your body before bringing it in under your feet
- Expect the tail to come around first, so it is normal to catch or land back foot first and then set the front foot down
