What the tutorials teach
All three coaches describe the same core mechanic: pop like a kickflip, start the flip but only take it a quarter to a half of the way round, and then bring the board back with the front foot rather than following through. Foot setup is agreed to be a kickflip stance, with VLSkate angling the front foot more toward the nose just below the bolts and Josh Katz hanging it further off the back edge. All three treat the kickflip as the real prerequisite, and both VLSkate and Parkmo point at the Casper flip as the helpful adjacent trick because the scoop-back motion is the same. They also agree on the trick's central weirdness, that flicking out and then pulling back the opposite way feels counterintuitive, and both VLSkate and Parkmo recommend practicing the front foot motion on its own before committing. The main disagreement is in how to cue the flick. VLSkate says slide up as if to flick but stop short so the board rests on your foot, Josh Katz describes an actual quarter flick followed by a shove it style forward push and a flick back, and Parkmo argues you should not flick at all but point the foot, because a real flick overrotates and lands you primo. Timing is where everyone lands: too early and the board flips into a primo landing, too late and it rotates vertically or stalls at 90 degrees.
- Set up like a kickflip, pop with the back foot and then let the back foot do nothing else; all of the work is in the front foot
- Slide or point the front foot up toward the nose but do not follow through with the flick, so the board only turns partway and stays against your foot
- Pull or scoop the front foot back around once the board is roughly a quarter to a third of the way over; it takes very little force
- Practice the front foot motion standing still or one footed before trying the full trick, and hold onto something to remove the fear while you experiment
- Landing primo usually means you scooped too early or flicked too hard; landing at 90 degrees usually means you scooped too late or your front foot is too far back
- Once you go for both feet, get the back foot up and out of the way so the board does not swing back into your leg
