What the tutorials teach

Across both dedicated frontside flip tutorials and the component kickflip and frontside 180 breakdowns, the consensus is that this trick isn't two motions layered on top of each other, it is a single flowing sequence: the back foot pops the tail while immediately winding the shoulders and hips frontside (exactly like a standalone frontside 180), and the board itself does a hardflip-like rotation up toward the front foot before the flick finishes the kickflip portion. Turning your head and shoulders before the board leaves the ground is the single most repeated cue for the rotation half, while flicking with the ankle (not the whole leg) off the side of the board just as it reaches your front foot is the most repeated cue for the flip half. The board tends to travel out in front of the rider rather than staying underneath them, so committing forward and staying above the board is essential, and landing one foot first is the universally recommended drill before committing to a full landing.

  • Turn your head and shoulders to face your direction of travel before the board leaves the ground, this single cue drives the entire frontside rotation
  • Set your back foot near the edge of the tail (not dead center) so you get both a strong pop and the frontside scoop needed for the 180
  • Set your front foot in a standard kickflip position, up on the ball of your foot, and open your front hip slightly toward your direction of travel
  • Let the board rise up toward your front foot in a hardflip-like motion before you flick, rather than flicking simultaneously with the pop like a plain kickflip
  • Flick out and slightly forward with your ankle only, off the side of the board, not with your whole leg
  • Lean back slightly through the pop so you can push the board out in front of you and stay above it as it rotates
  • Practice the standalone frontside 180 and the standalone kickflip until both feel automatic before combining them
  • Land with one foot first while you're building consistency, then commit fully once you trust the rotation, since bailing after the board is underneath you is riskier than riding it out
