Steps

  1. 1

    Prerequisites: frontside 360 shove-its

You need a clean frontside 360 shove-it before attempting. Get it consistent first.

    Force
    ●●○○○
    Direction
    forward
    Weight
    centered
TipFrontside 360 shove-its feel awkward at first. The scoop direction goes toward your toes.
  2. 2

    Full scoop and kick

Back foot executes the full frontside 360 scoop. Front foot kicks the heelflip simultaneously.

    Force
    ●●●●●
    Direction
    forward
    Weight
    centered
TipSince both rotations go the same direction, they feel more natural together than a hardflip.
  3. 3

    Jump back slightly

Both rotations push the board forward. Jump slightly behind the board's forward travel.

    Force
    ●●●●
    Direction
    up
    Weight
    back
TipMost laser flip slams come from being too far forward. Consciously jump back.
  4. 4

    Wait for both rotations

The full 360 + heelflip takes significant air time. Do not land early.

    Force
    ●●●●
    Direction
    up
    Weight
    centered
TipLike a tre flip, patience mid-air separates landed laser flips from slams.
  5. 5

    Stomp both feet

Once both rotations are complete, catch and stomp the board.

    Force
    ●●●●●
    Direction
    down
    Weight
    centered
TipLaser flips that land are often stomped very aggressively — commit to the landing.

Common mistakes

Ball of death

What
You roll off the front of the board.
Why
Both rotations push the board forward and you didn't jump back.
Fix
Deliberately jump backward to stay over the board.

Only heelflip completes

What
You land a regular heelflip.
Why
Frontside 360 scoop isn't committed enough.
Fix
Isolate and strengthen your frontside 360 shove-it before re-combining.

Why this works

The mechanics behind the trick

Board
Two full-commitment rotations: the 360° frontside scoop combined with the heelflip axis. These rotations work in the same direction, unlike a hardflip.
Feet
Back foot scoops frontside in a full 360° arc. Front foot kicks the heelflip simultaneously.
Weight
Both rotations push the board forward. Staying behind the board through the full rotation is the central challenge.

Frequently asked

How long does it take to learn a Laser Flip?
Most skaters land their first laser flip within 6-18 months of consistent practice, once you can heelflip, frontside 360 shove-it, and varial heelflip consistently.
What should I learn before the Laser Flip?
The laser flip builds on Heelflip, Frontside 360 Shove-it, and Varial Heelflip. Get those consistent first, since the laser flip reuses the same pop, balance, or flick.
Is the Laser Flip hard to learn?
The laser flip is an advanced trick. It gets much easier once you can already heelflip, frontside 360 shove-it, and varial heelflip.
