A detailed mechanical breakdown of all five events within a kickflip (jump, pop, flick, catch, land) with emphasis on flick direction, timing relative to jump peak, and why catching the board gently matters for progressing to gaps and grinds.
Key tips
Pop straight down with the back foot; any angle causes a varial instead of a clean kickflip
Spring off the balls of both feet for the jump, not just the knees, to generate real height
Front foot slides up at an angle and flicks off the side of the nose near the pocket, not off the side deck
Flick timing should happen just before you reach the peak of your jump, same timing as leveling an ollie
Flicking too early or upward causes a rocket board; flicking too late or downward makes the flip unpredictable
After the flick the front foot follows through past the nose, then returns back under your torso
Catching is gentle, a light touch to stop the flip in midair, not a stomp; stomping will cost you on gaps
Visualize the trick before committing: expecting the board to flip properly is what lets you stay over it
