A methodical breakdown that splits the trick into four parts (pressure, scoop and pre-flick, flick, hang time and landing) with slow-motion footage and emphasis on the timing difference between a varial flip flick and a standard kickflip flick.
Key tips
Back foot sits on the front edge of the tail with only toes hanging off; angle it slightly so the very front of your foot controls the scoop
Front foot is slightly farther from the nose than a kickflip and angled so your toes point off the front edge of the board toward the toe side
Start with shoulders open about 45 degrees to the board to set up the pre-flick, then square them in the air before landing
Apply a pre-flick: as the tail pops, curl your front foot slightly inward on its way up to set yourself up for a clean ankle flick
Flick straight forward with your ankle as the board pops, not off to the side like a kickflip, because the board is already rotating
The key timing difference: for a varial flip you flick as you are popping and scooping, not after you are already in the air
Do not use your front foot to help the rotation; let the back foot handle all the spin and keep your front foot focused purely on the flip
Catch the board at its highest point so gravity pulls it back to your feet rather than forcing it down
